Here we are. A new start, a new blog. In the past I've never managed to maintain a blog for long - I lose interest, I run out of things to say, I move on to dreaming up pithy Facebook statuses or simply get lost in a fantasy world that no one other than myself knows. Now, though... well, now I am older. I am, hopefully, wiser. A certain piece of paper I received in May claims to profess that I am more intellectual than I was a mere six months ago, though I do wonder at how true that really is. What I do know is that I am bored - especially bored of job searching, only to hear little back.
And so that leads me to my newest project: blog, take three (or is it four?) I have been reading a lot in the past few months as I find myself with more free time than I've had in a while. I've always been a big reader, and I don't foresee that changing any time soon. So, I reasoned, as I am reading anyway, why not create a blog about the books I'm reading? And that is exactly what I am doing - beginning in my next post, where I'll write up a review of the last book I read, Margaret Atwood's Oryx and Crake, and its sequel The Year of the Flood, of which I am currently in the middle.
My reading has lately focused on dystopian fiction, with some utopian and apocalyptic stories thrown in for good measure. I have been a fan of these genres for a long time, and they have certainly seen some notable additions in the past few years - The Hunger Games, anyone? The Young Adult section of bookstores and libraries alike have exploded with dystopian tales in the wake of The Hunger Games' success. Some of these young adult novels are quite good - I enjoyed Veronica Roth's freshman novel Divergent recently, the same for Ally Condie's Matched - and these young adult efforts are met by adult fiction novels such as Jasper Fforde's latest series, Shades of Grey, and Justin Cronin's 2010 hit The Passage. Many of my blog posts will cover these various visions of dystopian/futuristic worlds, with some other, general, fiction and non-fiction book reviews for good measure (for surely everyone wants to be well-read, no?)
The title of this blog, Intangible Utopia, comes from my obsession with the dystopian visions so many authors have envisioned. It has a somewhat poetic feel to it, don't you think?
Sit back and enjoy. I hope to keep this blog project going for a good long while.
:)
